I would like to take a moment to share with you some thoughts on a very important day in our history here at HVH. My name is Jeff Skinner, and I have proudly been employed at Harbour View Haven (HVH) for over 33 years. During that time, I have experienced many important life events.
At the top of the list, was “coming out of the closet”. For me it did not happen until I was in my 30th year of life. When it occurred, I swung the door open and never looked back. I was fortunate at the time that my family, friends and co-workers made it such a positive experience. Often, I think back to what took me so long but then I remember it has been a journey (and no one was surprised).
For many years it seemed like I was the only openly gay person at HVH. I wonder if this was true or whether others were hesitant to be their authentic selves. It can be a scary and very real-life changing decision – to face the world without any facade. In a perfect world it would be a simple process for everyone. This was not the case for me and many others who continue to struggle.
Fast forward to today and HVH has become a very diversified workplace, including staff and residents from the LGBTQ community, other ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. How far we have come!
On July 18th for the first time in HVH’s history we will raise a pride flag to represent all LGBTQ folks and their allies.
I could not be more proud and thankful we have such a forward-thinking administration. This will be a great day to celebrate the progress of our workplace culture at HVH.
