Harbour View Haven (HVH) opened its doors for service on April 25, 1971. It is a non-profit organization, officially named "The Lunenburg Home for Special Care Corporation". Our home provides a vital support to seniors. HVH is one of the largest employers in the Town of Lunenburg employing over 200 partners in quality care.
Since our opening we have grown in so many ways. We started our practice with 102 beds. At that time we were one of the first nursing homes on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. Then, as need grew, so did we and we added another 28 beds in 1984, and yet again in 2011 with the opening of New Haven we now support 144 residents. We remain the largest fully accredited nursing home in our district.
In addition to growing our capacity to house more seniors, we also made significant investments into ensuring the top quality of life for them while living at HVH. For example, in 1998 we developed an industry leading Dementia Unit, and have shared our best practices with other seniors homes provincially. This Dementia Unit includes a "Snoezelen" Room. This revolutionary approach helps families and residents to connect and experience life enjoyment by providing unique experiences that often have a calming effect by drawing upon senses that residents may no longer use every day.
The physical facility has been improved as well over the years. From the installation of a second elevator to help manage the ever changing needs of our residents to structural improvements like new windows, roofs, and heating equipment. These "behind the scenes" improvements that we make have a real time impact on the life of our residents providing increased comfort, safety and home like atmosphere.
Harbour View Haven is proud to be licensed by the Province to provide 24-hour care to our residents. We have enjoyed the opportunity to write our history within Lunenburg for over 40 years, and look forward to many more.
