March is Nutrition Month

What does it look like to eat healthy? Well, if you ask the internet, it looks like bowls full of raw fruits and vegetables on clean white countertops and glass containers full of meal prep for the week. Now, there’s nothing wrong with that, but that’s one small peek into what healthy eating can look like.


Everyone has different values, religious views, food traditions, preferences, health conditions, and budgets. Food is more than just nutrition for our bodies; it’s also a way of expressing our cultures, bonding, and sharing our feelings. We all have different “wants” and “needs”, so what’s good for you might not work for someone else.


Nutrition is not one-size-fits-all! There’s a reason the plate on Canada’s Food Guide is so diverse. It’s designed to be inclusive of all Canadians. No one is expected to have all that on their plate at once. In reality, a “healthy plate” could look like or not look like any of these plates/bowls below:

Did you know that HVH plants a sensory garden each summer? Sensory gardens help to provide meaningful and stimulating outdoor engagement opportunities for our residents. Research has shown benefits and positive outcomes for seniors’ mental health when provided access to the outdoors. This includes: • Improved sleep patterns • Positive impacts of natural light on mood • Promotes physical movement, social engagement, stress reduction, and opportunities for relaxation • Stimulates positive memories The goals of our sensory garden experiences include providing opportunities for increased relaxation, well-being, and enjoyment of the outdoors! Volunteers, family, staff, and residents are all welcome to enjoy our wonderful garden space during the summer months.
